NEW DELHI, Dec 24 (Bernama) -- A pneumonia patient is alleged to have bled

to death after rats nibbled off his penis in a government-run hospital in

Kolkata, reported local media.

The horrific incident happened at the SSKM Hospital on Friday where Arun

Sandhukh, 53, was seeking treatment for pneumonia, reported the Asian Age

newspaper.

The hospital authorities admitted the prevalent of rat menace in the wards

but did not comment further.

"No nurse was found at the scene and he was writhing in pain. His penis had

been nibbled by rats," the victim''s relative only known as Bishwanath told the

media.

Only family members who came to visit Arun discovered him dead in a pool of

blood, said the news report.

A 40-year-old Taiwanese woman, who led a crime syndicate, was arrested.
Also detained were 17 members of the gang.

Taichung police said the gangster head – nicknamed "Little Girl Ma" or "Sister Ma" – was more ruthless than even the men.

S$1,200 Steam Fish at RWS Restaurant

yahoo News - A 35-year-old diner and four friends feasted on a steamed fish dish at a restaurant in Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). At the end of the meal, upon receiving the bill, his jaw hit the ground.
What seemed like a simple dish ended up costing a whopping S$1,224.

The diner, who only wanted to be known as Mr Liu, took his four friends to RWS’ Feng Shui Inn restaurant on June 12. He had initially asked for marble goby, better known locally as “soon hock”, but was told there was no stock for the fish.

A waiter then recommended the white sultan fish instead. The group agreed, without enquiring about the cost of the dish. But when the bill arrived, the five diners were shocked to find that the single sultan fish, weighing 1.8kg, set them back by a staggering S$1,224.

“(The waiter) didn’t mention the price (of the fish), and we also didn’t think too much about it and just said okay,” Mr Liu told Lianhe Wanbao.

He complained about the price of the fish during payment and the restaurant responded by giving him a 15% discount on the bill as a gesture of goodwill.

“The customer has the right to know and the restaurant should have made clear its price so we could decide whether it was worth it,” Mr Liu said.

In response to the incident, an RWS spokesman claims that the practice of not disclosing menu prices is common in upscale restaurants. “It is not always appropriate to state menu prices to high-end customers who have come to expect a certain discretion when they entertain high-level guests, ” he explains.

RWS conceded that the incident could have been a “lapse of judgement” but it was smoothed over quickly with an on-the-spot discount.

But is S$68 per 100g for a sultan fish a reasonable amount?

A quick comparison with Capital Restaurant, which has been selling sultan fish for 36 years, reveals that the dish can go for as low as S$6 per 100g. This is less than a tenth of Fengshui Inn’s price tag on the fish.

Chef Pung Lu Tin, 50, of Seafood International Market and Restaurant, explained the sultan fish is sought-after because it was not easy to catch. He added that its meat was “very smooth”.
“The flesh is tender and snow white. It’s a wild river fish, so it eats fruits that drops from trees and bears the fragrance of fruit,” Chef Huang Ching Biao, 58, kitchen operations director at Jin Shan restaurant at MBS told The New Paper.

But despite its draw, both chefs added that they have not come across any commanding such a high price. One seafood distributor known only as Mr Lee even described the price of the fish at Fengshui Inn as “outrageous”.

This seafood shocker is reminiscent of an incident that occurred in March last year, where six American tourists were charged S$239 for a mere eight tiger prawns at Newton hawker centre.
The stall involved had its licence suspended for three months by the National Environment Agency (NEA) for breaching licencing conditions.

Incidents like these throw the spotlight on questionable charging practices in Singapore. For a country positioning itself as a tourism hub, these bad dining experiences are sure to leave a bitter after-taste.

THREE men who carried out what police described as a 'cruel' and 'inhumane' spate of attacks in the Kallang area on Sunday were arrested on Monday night.

The trio, all Sarawakians who worked here as cleaners and odd-job workers, went on a planned orgy of violent theft which has been rarely seen here.

The men, who stayed at a Syed Alwi Road lodging house, are believed to have hatched their crimes with four others. The gang went on a knife-wielding rampage that left one person dead, two others in intensive care and another with half his palm hacked off - all for $400 in cash and three cellphones.

Police have mounted a huge manhunt in several areas for the remaining four suspects who are believed to be part of the same gang. The seven may also be responsible for a few other similar slash-and-rob incidents in the area recently.

Said Criminal Investigation Department chief Ng Boon Gay: 'What the group had done was very violent. They not only robbed people of some small items... some hand phones and cash... they caused harm and killed one of them. These are all innocent victims. They had nothing to do with the culprits.'

The gang selected their quarry at random, stalking each one before pouncing on them with knives. All four were slashed and hacked before the gang made off with their belongings. They moved from one victim to another, covering a stretch of 2km in Kallang in the space of seven hours.

(Rome) -- An Italian teen stabbed his father in the neck with a 15-inch kitchen knife Sunday following an argument over a soccer video game.Police say the man is recovering in a hospital.

The argument apparently broke out when the dad gave his 16-year-old son advice on how to improve his play of the Sony PlayStation game.

Police say the boy grabbed a kitchen knife, stabbed his father and then cleaned the weapon at the kitchen sink in front of his mother.She says her husband stumbled into the kitchen clutching his bloody throat.The woman says their son is obsessed with PlayStation.She and her husband had given him the soccer video game last week as a birthday gift so the boy wouldn't play violent games.The teen made no attempt to resist arrest following the stabbing incident.

This horrific incident is simply beyond words. A 15-year-old Romanian boy stabbed his adoptive mother to death after she refused to pay the Internet bills. The boy, Ionut, is addicted to online video games.

It was said that Ionut stabbed his adoptive mother 17 times when she decided to stop paying the bills. This was so he would cut down the time he was spending in front of the computer playing his games. What is even more disturbing about this incident, however, is that a mere three hours after the killing, Ionut left the home and headed to an Internet cafe to play Counter-Strike.

Meanwhile, the husband of the victim found her dead in their home and subsequently reported the incident to the cops. Ionut, later on, turned himself voluntarily to the authorities, calmly telling them that "I think I'm the one you're looking for."

Ionut has been admitted to an underground psychiatric clinic in a local hospital. Test will be conducted to determine his pyschological state, and if found that he was fully competent when the crime was committed, he could face up to 12 years in prison for the murder.

A man who lost his way in the dark while wandering around on sea ice off the coast of Germany was saved by a woman 300 miles away who spotted him on a webcam, according to police.
The unnamed man, in his forties, had ventured out on the frozen North Sea at the resort of St Peter-Ording on the northern tip of Germany to take pictures of the sunset, but became disorientated when darkness fell.

“He got lost on the ice and could not find the coast again because it was covered in snow,” Kristin Stielow, a spokeswoman for the local police said.
The man began to flash his pocket torch in the hope of being rescued. The beams were picked up by a sharp-eyed woman 500 km away in western Germany who had also been watching the sunset via a webcam installed on the beach.

She alerted the police, who were able to guide the hapless amateur photographer to safety.
“He escaped without injury but could well have died from cold or been injured on the ice or drowned when the tide came in,” Ms Stielow said.

The country that gave the world The Body, Sylvania Waters and Les Patterson has been ranked first overall in a study of the seven deadly sins - lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride," according to 'Courier Mail' newspaper that qouted the latest edition of BBC's focus magazine.

Australia took out the dubious honour in the edition of BBC's magazine of science, technology and the future.

While US topped the table for gluttony, South Korea topped the list for lust.

Iceland ranked number one for both pride and sloth and Mexico topped the list for greed, the study revealed.

Australia's biggest weakness was envy and ranked in the top 10 in all categories to give a higher aggregate than the US, Canada, Finland or Britain.

The article, which argues that people are "bad" by nature, has found social data to compare nations under the categories of wrath, sloth, pride, lust, greed, gluttony and envy. The report said to determine country's wrong doings, the researchers studied levels of violent crime by comparing incidents of assault, rape and murder per 1000 people.

For sloth, they looked at the number of days off workers have. For pride the comparison was made on plastic surgery rates per capita, and for lust they looked at the amount people spent on porn.

ROME - An Italian man who argued with his son over Sony PlayStation tactics was recovering in hospital on Monday after the teenager stabbed him in the neck with a 15-inch kitchen knife, police and hospital officials said.

The man, identified as Fabrizio R., suffered a deep cut to the throat after his 16-year-old son, Mario, attacked him during an argument on Sunday over the soccer video game FIFA 2009.
Police said the argument broke out when the 46-year-old storekeeper offered his son advice on tactics to improve his play, and then turned the television off in response to his son's behavior.
Fetching a knife from the kitchen, Mario stabbed his father in the neck before returning to clean the weapon at the kitchen sink in front of his mother and leaving it to dry on the draining-board. Forty-six year-old housewife Monica B,. told Italian daily Il Corriere della Sera that she had no idea what had happened until her husband stumbled into the room, clutching his throat.
"I saw Mario come back into the room, he seemed calm, he went to the sink and I noticed him washing a knife," Monica told the newspaper. "Then my husband came into the room with a hand round his neck, dripping blood."

The teenager shut himself in his bedroom after the attack and made no attempt to resist arrest, police said.

The game had been given to Mario a few days earlier, as a birthday present.
"Mario is obsessed. He's forever playing on his PlayStation, and we bought him FIFA 2009 because we didn't want him playing violent games," his mother told Il Corriere.

The next day he met up with Wong, who identified herself as "KiKi."They met at Sham Shui Po MTR station at 1pm and went to Ting's flat in Shek Kip Mei.After they had sex, Ting strangled Wong for one to two minutes before he started to feel dizzy, the court was told.

Wong weighed only about 36 kilograms, while Ting was nearly three times her weight.After awaking, he saw blood coming from Wong's mouth. When he discovered she was no longer breathing, he dismembered her then sliced the flesh away from the bone, which he chopped into small pieces and flushed down the toilet.He wrapped her head in a plastic bag, placed that in a paper bag and then took a bus to Kowloon City pier where he threw it into the sea, the prosecution said.

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - – Malaysia will take action against air force personnel involved in the theft of a 14.5-million-dollar fighter jet engine sold to a South American company, according to reports Sunday.

Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the company hired an agent to take the 50-million-ringgit engine out of the country from a military airbase, the Star newspaper and national news agency Bernama reported.

"The ministry will take legal action at the international level to charge the company involved," he was quoted as saying by Bernama, without specifying the type of action or identifying the company.

"Stern action will also be taken against the Royal Malaysian Air Force staff involved for betraying the country," the minister added.

Air force officers found the jet engine was missing late last year during a routine maintenance service, but the matter became public only after the English-language New Straits Times published a report on Saturday.

The newspaper also said police had arrested four individuals, including the buyer, the seller and air force personnel who assisted in stealing the engine, used as powerplant for a single-seat fighter and reconnaissance aircraft.

Mass. woman, 98, accused of killing roommate, 100

A 98-year-old woman was indicted Friday on a second-degree murder charge that alleges she strangled her 100-year-old nursing home roommate after making the victim's life "a living hell" because she thought the woman was "taking over the room."

Laura Lundquist was sent to a state mental hospital for a competency evaluation before her arraignment. Her defense attorney, Carl Levin, said she has a "long-standing diagnosis of dementia, as well as issues of cognitive impairment."

She is believed to be the oldest murder defendant in state history, but might never go to trial because of her mental health issues.

Her roommate at the Brandon Woods nursing home in Dartmouth, Elizabeth Barrow, was found dead in her bed Sept. 24 with a plastic bag tied around her head. Police initially speculated it was a suicide, but a medical examiner ruled it a homicide after an autopsy indicated strangulation.
Barrow's son, Scott Barrow, has said Lundquist complained to nursing home officials about the number of visitors his mother received. He also has said Lundquist had made "threatening" and "harassing" remarks to her. He declined to comment on the indictment, which was handed up Friday by a Bristol grand jury.

Bristol District Attorney Sam Sutter said Lundquist suffered from paranoia and "harbored hostility towards the victim" and thought Barrow "was taking over the room they shared."
Sutter said Barrow complained in the weeks prior to her death that Lundquist was making her life "a living hell." The night before Barrow was killed, Lundquist put a table at the foot of her bed to block her way to the bathroom, then punched a nurses aide who removed it, he said.
Lundquist also told Barrow she would soon get her bed by the window because she would outlive her, Sutter said.

The two women had been roommates for about a year. Scott Barrow has said he asked nursing home officials to separate the women, but they assured him the two were getting along. A Superior Court judge, acting on a motion filed jointly by prosecutors and Levin, ordered Lundquist sent to Taunton State Hospital for an evaluation.

Sutter said the case likely won't ever go to trial because of the possible incompetency finding and because the defense will likely involve mental health issues, which take a long time to prosecute.
Levin said that if someone is found not competent to stand trial, the state would likely move for a civil commitment.

"Her family is very saddened for the loss of Ms. Barrow, and they are also very saddened by what's happened," Levin said. "Without acknowledging her responsibility, it's a sad event for both families. It just really points to the issue of mental health with the elderly."

Prosecutors pursued second-degree murder charges because they didn't believe Lundquist had the cognitive ability to form premeditation, which must be proven in a first-degree murder case, Sutter said.

Lundquist is believed to be the oldest murder defendant in state history, Sutter said.
"It is my intention to advance this case in a professional, ethical and humane manner," he said.
Sutter said prosecutors decided not to file charges against the nursing home, but did not elaborate.

Brandon Woods' chief of operations, Scott Picone, said the home was "deeply saddened by this tragic event, and our thoughts and prayers go out to both families." He declined to comment further.

In a statement, the home said the roommates acted like sisters, walked and ate lunch together daily and said, "Goodnight, I love you," to each other every night. The home said Barrow declined a room change in July and August.

The statement also said the home was establishing a scholarship in Barrow's name, and Scott Barrow was chair of the scholarship committee.

Doctors in southwestern China have removed a needle from the brain of an 11-year-old girl, believed inserted after birth in an attempted murder by relatives who had wanted a boy, a report said Thursday.

Rusted needle shards were detected by doctors in August after fruitless attempts by the girl's mother over the years to find the cause of an apparent mental disability, the Sichuan Online news website reported.

The girl, identified as "Ping Ping", did not begin walking or talking until she was six, currently has the intelligence level of a three-year-old, and has suffered for years from unexplained fevers, it said.

She was said to be recovering from the operation at a hospital in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province.

The child's mother, Yang Xiaohui, said she suspected that relatives had tried to kill the child shortly after birth.

Under China's "one child" family planning policy, the traditional cultural and economic preference for boys remains strong, especially in the vast and poor countryside.
Reports of aborted female foetuses and infanticide remain common.

In 2007, doctors in southwestern Yunnan province discovered 26 needles embedded in the body of a 29-year-old woman, state media said at the time.

They were believed to have been inserted not long after she was born by grandparents upset she was not a boy, the reports said. Doctors operated on the woman to remove the needles.

Paea Taufu, a Tongan-born man living in Auckland New Zealand was in the process of roasting his pitbull terrier-cross in a traditional Umu pit-barbecue when animal protection inspectors arrived to investigate.

They were called by a concerned member of the public on Sunday but arrived too late for the animal.

Dog meat is considered an acceptable fare in Tonga. "Dog, horse, we eat it in Tonga. It's good food for us," said Lupi Taufu, Paea's wife.

Under New Zealand's Animal Welfare Act it is legal to kill a dog providing the slaughter is done quickly and painlessly.

But the local Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has criticised the actions. "I find it quite disturbing that someone would kill a pet and then eat it. I'm not okay with that but unfortunately the law allows you to do it," SPCA Inspector Derek Haddy told reporters.
Taufu was not aware that he was doing something uncommon in New Zealand but indicated he would not kill another dog to avoid offending anyone in the future.
